So This Is Love?
The Gold N Aussie Story

It all began so innocently. How were we to know it would lead to this?

On a lovely spring day in 1987, a friend gifted us with a beautiful black tri Australian Shepherd. He was wonderful. Everything you could want in a dog and more. We fell in love, the kids fell in love, and we took "Paddy O' Bear" home with us. Our lives would never be the same.

Spring forward seventeen years, five of the seven kids are grown. With only two children at home, it was time for a new puppy! Of course it would be another Aussie. We found a breeder whose dogs we loved and discovered puppy waiting lists! So we added our name to the list. While waiting for the "perfect" puppy, one of our clients introduced us to dog shows. ASCA shows to be exact. What fun! Everyone was so nice and there were so many beautiful dogs. We went to several shows and met a breeder who let our boys play with her dogs. Then she let our son Andrew show one of her finished dogs in Juniors. He was hooked! We were hooked! All we needed now was a Junior's dog. Blessed by the help of our puppy's breeder, we were introduced to the perfect dog for our family....a beautiful black tri! We fell in love, the kids fell in love, and "Foxy" came home with us. Andrew and Foxy finished her ASCA Championship in one weekend last December in heavy California competition with three 5 pt majors, two Best of Winners, One Best of Opposite Sex and one Best of Breed! They are a wonderful team and we are very proud of them. Please look for them in the Junior's ring.

When we began showing, Steve made a beautiful silver pin for me to wear. Of course, it was an Aussie. We are jewelers by trade and own a retail custom design jewelry store in California. Becoming jewelers was almost as natural as breathing for Steve and I. Steve's great grandfather began the family jewelry business in 1904. Steve is a fourth generation jeweler, a Graduate Gemologist, and a master craftsman. His skill and creativity as a designer is evident in each piece he creates. Steve began working in the family business at the age of 14. I am a Graduate Jeweler Gemologist and designer. My background includes serving as a Colored Stones and Gem Identification Instructor for the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), and as a Staff Gemologist for the GIA Gem Trade Laboratory.

Steve and I opened our own jewelry store in 1989. In keeping with the family heritage of excellence, each piece of jewelry is carefully designed and handcrafted of the finest precious metals and natural gemstones, with meticulous attention to detail. It is only natural that we would also make jewelry that reflects the love we have for our Aussies! I wore my pin to the shows and soon people began asking where they could get one. So "Gold N Aussie" began. Just as each breeder strives to better the breed, we strive to accurately reflect the breed standard of the Australian Shepherd in our "Gold N Aussie" jewelry. Our desire is to capture special moments with Aussies-whether in competition or at play.

We are having a great time showing our dogs and meeting so many wonderful people. We have been blessed with friends who have encouraged us in this new endeavor. We would like to say "Thank You" to them for putting up with all of our "newbie" questions, and teaching us so much. You're the best!

Look for Gold N Aussie at various shows on the west coast, and the ASCA and USASA Nationals.

This story was first printed in the July-August 2004 issue of the Aussie Times. We have since moved to Onalaska, WA., where we continue to design beautiful jewelry. In our spare time, we are restoring an almost 100 year old Craftsman style farmhouse, while the kids and the dogs play on five acres.
